The latest in firefighting innovation: Scientists develop a device that will save lives

Scientists at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea, led by Bon-tae Koo, have developed technology that will save lives by helping firefighters locate victims inside buildings that have suffered a fire, explosion or a landslide.

This new technology at the service of firefighters is a system capable of detecting through walls or rubble, the vital signs of the victims, such as breathing or heartbeat, thanks to a high-precision radar sensor.

The new technology can be installed on a firefighter’s helmet or can be used as a portable device that can be easily transported to the scene of a disaster. The scrutinizing capacity of the new system is based on radio waves.

The main components of the system are two. One of them is a low-cost, low-power radar sensor that can detect movement using reflected electromagnetic waves. Thus, it can detect vital signs such as the victim’s breathing and heartbeat, which are difficult for the naked eye to pick up. The other is a radar sensor that can detect a person behind a wall or buried under rubble.

The current size of the system is similar to that of a bag, but it is planned to miniaturize it so that in the future firefighters can comfortably wear it integrated into their helmet.
