Scientists from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Zhuhai Futian Energy Technology Company, developed the first demonstration device to produce 1,000 tons/year of gasoline from the hydrogenation of CO2 , and has already completed its technology evaluation and test operation.

“This technology marks a new stage in the world’s CO2 resource utilization technology and provides a new strategy to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality,” Professor Sun Jian, first author of the research, said in a statement.

The hydrogenation of CO 2 into liquid fuels and chemicals can not only realize the utilization of CO 2 resources, but also facilitate the storage and transportation of renewable energy.

However, activation and selective conversion of CO 2 are challenging. A technology that can selectively produce energy-dense, value-added hydrocarbon fuels will provide a new route to promote the clean, low-carbon energy revolution.

The carbon dioxide-to-gasoline hydrogenation technology was proposed by DICP scientists in 2017, with a paper published in Nature Communications.

The demonstration device was completed at Zoucheng Industrial Park in 2020. In October 2021, the device passed the 72-hour continuous on-site evaluation organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF). It could realize 95% CO2 and H2 conversion, 85% gasoline selectivity in all carbon-based products, with reduced CO2 and H2 feedstock consumption.

It produced a clean and green gasoline product with an octane rating above 90 according to Chinese standard, accompanied by low energy consumption throughout the process.
