Colombia expands natural gas supply and imports from La Guajira

This development is in addition to other initiatives that seek to diversify the sources of natural gas supply in Colombia and reduce risks.

In the current scenario of the Colombian energy market, the strengthening of new sources of natural gas supply has become a priority. In this context, the import and regasification initiative being developed in La Guajira is a strategic move to improve the security of the system and guarantee the supply of essential demand in the coming years.

The importation of natural gas from Guajira

In accordance with the provisions of the regasification plant project in this department, Transportadora de Gas Internacional is moving forward with the integration of a floating storage and regasification unit that will receive liquefied natural gas, return it to a gaseous state and send it to the interior of the country through existing infrastructure. This connection will be made through the Chuchupa B-Ballena line, a strategic point in the national gas transportation system.

In addition, the use of existing facilities at the Chuchupa B platform reduces implementation times and optimizes the investments required to enable the entry of imported fuel. The projected capacity of the system will reach up to 250 million cubic feet per day, a volume that provides direct support to the residential, commercial, industrial and thermal sectors.

On the other hand, the agreement signed with the operator of the Guajira Association ensures the right to use the transfer line, which strengthens the operational reliability of the project. This progress is in line with the country’s long-term plans, as it prepares the infrastructure for receiving gas from offshore developments from offshore developments and maintain current production levels in the area.

In this sense, the totality of the investments associated with the adaptation in Ballena and the additional improvements to the gas supply will be assumed by the transporter, a clear sign of the commitment of Grupo Energía Bogotá with the continuous supply of this public service.
