Mozambique’s president leads the relaunch of the Mozambique LNG Project

The project will further consolidate Mozambique as an energy hub in Southern Africa, promoting access to new energy sources and contributing to the diversification of the country's economy.

The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, led the re-launch ceremony of the Mozambique LNG project, an energy megaproject led by France’s TotalEnergies. After almost five years of paralysis, the restart of this ambitious project marks an important milestone for the national economy and highlights the confidence of international partners in the country’s potential.

Economic impact of the Mozambique LNG project

The event, which took place in Afungi, Palma District, Cabo Delgado Province, was also attended by Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies. This relaunch underscores Mozambique’s strategic importance in the global energy sector, specifically in the liquefied natural gas market..

President Chapo mentioned that the reactivation of the Mozambique LNG project will benefit large companies, and will have a direct impact on job creation for the local population, both in the construction phases and in the long-term operation. In addition, it will boost the development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises(MSMEs), which will have new business opportunities in the project’s supply chain.

The president stressed the importance of promoting local content and including communities in the value chain, with the aim of improving living conditions and strengthening local economies.

One of the central pillars of this project is the direct benefit to local communities, both on the mainland and on the islands.

The relaunch of the project will also contribute to the development of technical and entrepreneurial skills. Training programs will be created that will strengthen the national labor force and improve the country’s competitiveness in the energy sector.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the Mozambique LNG project will be a strategic driver for increasing foreign direct investment(FDI), which will strengthen the country’s economic stability and contribute to sustainable growth. The reactivation of this project also reaffirms Mozambique as a relevant player in the global energy market and enhances its geostrategic position in the context of global energy security.
