BOEM opens process for offshore leasing in California

BOEM analyzes potential areas for new offshore concessions in California under the 2026-2031 energy leasing program.

Areas of interest in California

  • Southern California Call: contemplates possible exploitation concessions in that planning area. The first sale is expected in 2027.
  • Central California Call: covers areas with potential for offshore energy developments, also with a first sale estimated for 2027.

The initiative invites energy companies to submit nominations and citizens, tribal governments and stakeholders to provide information on environmental, socioeconomic and other relevant factors.

It is important to note that this stage does not imply a final decision on the sale of leases. The information gathered will allow the Department of the Interior and BOEM to decide whether to move forward with the necessary preliminary steps, subject to applicable regulations.

Citizen participation open for 30 days

Beginning January 27, 2026, a 30-day period is open for the public to review the solicitations and submit electronic comments through Regulations.gov, using the docket numbers specified in the official notices.
