Japanese operator JERA has announced the inaugural shipment of liquefied natural gas(LNG) from the Barossa field in Australia to the Asian market, enhancing its energy strategy.

New gas flow from the Barossa field to Asia

The gas extracted from the Barossa project will be processed at the Darwin liquefaction plant in northern Australia. This complex replaces the previous supply from the Bayu-Undan field, which recently ended production. The Barossa infrastructure includes a subsea pipeline that directly connects the production field to the Darwin plant, optimizing export logistics to Asia.

Through its subsidiary JERA Australia, the company owns 12.5% of the project. This participation guarantees JERA access to some 425,000 tons of LNG per year, strengthening its position as one of the main players in the energy market in the region.

The shipment enhances Australia’s participation as a reliable supplier to Asian countries and underlines the importance of importance of LNG as a transition fuel on the path to net zero emissions. In that sense, such moves by JERA enabled it to diversify its sources of supply and offer affordable and stable energy over the long term.

With a presence throughout the energy supply chain, from upstream production to power generation, JERA seeks to consolidate its position as a benchmark in sustainable technologies. The integration of Barossa gas into its global portfolio responds to this vision, expanding its capacity to respond to today’s energy challenges.

This first shipment strengthens the trade relationship between Japan and Australia, and maintains the Asia-Pacific’s energy interdependence. The geographic proximity between the two countries, coupled with decades of cooperation in the gas and oil gas sectorThe geographical proximity between the two countries, coupled with decades of cooperation in the gas sector, makes this operation a key step towards a secure regional supply.
