I International Conference on Renewable Energy El Hierro 2026: Leading the Island Energy Transition
The island of El Hierro is preparing to welcome the vanguard of engineering and global sustainability at the I International Conference on Renewable Energy (ICRE) 2026. From November 10 to 13, 2026, this territory, recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, will become the epicenter of the debate on energy self-sufficiency and decarbonization of isolated systems. Organized by a consortium of excellence that includes Gorona del Viento El Hierro, Endesa and the University of La Laguna (ULL), the event is not only an academic conference, but a technical immersion in the world’s most successful energy model.
The scientific program will focus on the milestones of the Gorona del Viento hydro wind power plant, a pioneering infrastructure that combines wind power with pumped hydro storage to ensure a stable and clean supply. Attendees will have the opportunity to closely analyze the challenges of grid stability in micro-grids and the integration of variable energies, using the island as a natural laboratory in real time.
In addition to the technical sessions, the conference will serve as a platform to disseminate the results of the IDIWATER project, co-funded by the European Interreg MAC 2021-2027 program. This project seeks to enhance applied research and knowledge transfer in the water-energy nexus, a critical issue for the outermost regions and archipelagos facing the double challenge of water scarcity and energy dependence. With the prominent participation of the DESAL+ Living Lab, the event will ensure a high level of innovation in sustainable industrial solutions.
This international forum is designed for researchers, public managers and business leaders seeking real solutions to the climate crisis. El Hierro offers the perfect setting to connect with international experts and witness how an island has achieved milestones in $100 renewable generation.
