SOCAR has initiated a new strategic phase in Azerbaijan’s natural gas exports with the sale of significant volumes of gas destined for southern and central European markets. These supplies will be transported through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, one of the main energy infrastructures connecting the Caspian region with the European continent.
Starting this January 2026, Azerbaijani gas will begin to be supplied, among other destinations, to Austria and Germany, significantly expanding Azerbaijan’s presence in important Central European energy markets.
Expanding the reach of Azerbaijani gas in Europe
Gas supplies to Austria and Germany will be routed through Italy, reinforcing TAP’s role as a strategic corridor for transporting natural gas to Europe. This logistical expansion further extends the geographical reach of Azerbaijani gas within the continent.
As a result of this expansion, the number of countries currently buying gas from Azerbaijan has risen to 16, consolidating an increasingly broad and diversified export network.
Energy strategy and international positioning
In accordance with the gas strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, defined under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, SOCAR continues to steadily strengthen its gas trading activities in both Europe and the Middle East.
The state-owned company is expanding its portfolio of cooperation with buyers from different countries, strengthening energy partnerships and consolidating Azerbaijan’s position as a reliable and stable energy supplier in a context of growing demand and the need for diversification of energy sources.
