Variable compression ratio as a modernization path to 2030

WinGD drives the modernization of LNG carriers using VCR technology to meet environmental objectives without shutting down operations or replacing current assets.

The transition to a cleaner maritime industry does not depend exclusively on new construction or future fuels. In many cases, the key lies in improving what is already in use. This is WinGD’s understanding, and it proposes a concrete technical solution: variable compression ratio (VCR) technology, applied to dual LNG engines engines already installed in operating fleets.

VCR modernization in LNG fleets to reduce emissions

Most of the ships that will be in operation in 2030 are already sailing today. This poses an obvious challenge: How to meet IMO decarbonization targets without completely renewing the fleets? WinGD puts forward a viable strategy: retrofitting current engines with VCR technology during the dry docks without disrupting the commercial operation of the ship.

The VCR system allows the compression ratio to be dynamically modified according to load and operating conditions. This optimizes combustion and reduces both fuel consumption and methane slip, especially at partial loads. The integration of the VCR into the engine control architecture facilitates its use without additional crew intervention.

Concrete results without altering operations

The redesign is performed during planned maintenance, avoiding extra downtime. More than 170 orders since its launch in 2023 reflect market confidence, with particular adoption in LNG carriers and growing interest in bulk carriers, container ships and car carriers.

The application of VCR to existing X-DF and RT-flex50DF engines offers a high-impact technical solution. It allows shipowners to comply with environmental regulations, reduce operating costs and extend the life of existing assets, all with a technology available today.

Compatible with the present and ready for the future

Although optimized for LNG engines, VCR technology is designed to adapt to emerging fuels. This allows operators to prepare for a progressive transition to new alternatives without compromising current investments.

The strategy of WinGD strategy positions VCR as a realistic and scalable modernization tool. An approach that responds to the immediate challenges of the industry without relying on uncertain developments.
