NEOM project’s green hydrogen plant advances to 80% following NGHC reports

El avance del proyecto NEOM

The construction of the green hydrogen plant, located in the Oxagon region within the NEOM project, has exceeded 80% progress in all strategic areas. This was reported by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), a consortium composed of ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM.

The progress of the NEOM project

With the arrival and installation of key components such as electrolyzers, wind turbines, storage tanks and transmission modules, the company celebrated this milestone by sharing public images of the project’s current status for the first time.

The plant is designed to operate entirely on solar and wind power, with an estimated capacity of 4 GW to power the electrolysis process. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen, which will be converted into green ammonia for global export.

In addition, this infrastructure is expected to contribute up to 5 million metric tons of CO₂ reduction per year, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 climate targets.

According to the updated schedule, construction of the solar and wind farms is expected to be completed by mid-2026. Subsequently, the hydrogen electrolysis system will come on line, with first production scheduled for 2027.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) is led by Air Products, which also provides the air separation technologies for nitrogen production. The electrolysis system is based on Thyssenkrupp technology.

The NEOM Green Hydrogen project represents the first commercial-scale green hydrogen facility of its kind, positioning Saudi Arabia as a key player in the global sustainable fuels market. With an estimated investment of USD 8.5 billion, the model integrates solar, wind and storage, and lays the groundwork for similar initiatives in other regions.
