Uniper has officially approved the construction of its first solar farm in Scotland, located north of Dundee. The site is known as Berryhill Solar Farm, and will have an estimated capacity of 68.8 MWp (45 MW) and will feature approximately 152,000 solar panels.

Scotland’s first solar farm

The development was initially promoted in conjunction with Solar2. However, Uniper will assume full control of its execution. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and energy production is expected to start in the same year.

The project has been designed to generate sufficient renewable electricity to supply the equivalent of more than 12,500 UK homes each year, representing around 20% of the population of the Angus area. This installation is in line with the country’s commitments towards net emissions reductions and the transition to clean sources.

The solar farm will be connected to the grid by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks(SSEN), which will install a 9 km medium-voltage cable to the Charleston substation in Kingsway, Dundee.

Berryhill received its first planning permission in 2022, subsequently amended in 2024 following Solar2’s review of the plans. In addition, a community benefit fund will be agreed in conjunction with the local authorities of Muirhead, Birkhill and Liff, which will allow resources to be allocated to social and environmental initiatives in the area.

The Düsseldorf-based energy company has intensified its investments in renewable energies as part of its transformation strategy. It now operates in more than 40 countries and has 14 GW of flexible generation capacity.
