Iberdrola and EMT Madrid lead project to give new life to electric batteries

Batteries from out-of-use buses now power the infrastructure that allows other EMT electric vehicles to be recharged.

In a firm commitment to efficiency and the circular economy, Iberdrola España and Irizar e-mobility have joined forces with Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT) to launch a project that gives a new use to the batteries removed from its fleet of electric buses. electric buses.

New use for retired bus batteries

A static storage system integrating batteries in their second life cycle is already in operation at the Fuencarral operations center. Although these batteries no longer offer sufficient autonomy for daily transport, their residual capacity allows them to be used to support the recharging of vehicles. vehicle recharging. This initiative, part of the PERTE VEC program, seeks to optimize energy use and reduce the costs associated with electricity demand during peak hours.

On the one hand, Iberdrola has collaborated in the technical development of the system and its validation in the field, ensuring operational efficiency. On the other hand, Irizar e-mobility has designed the reconditioned battery container reconditioned battery container that now forms part of the center’s energy ecosystem. The combination of applied engineering and intelligent charging management (smartcharging) makes it possible to reduce consumption peaks and improve the system’s autonomy without the need for new batteries.
