During the NISTM 2025 event, Lee Rice, Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Camera Solutions, shared his approach on how the company is redefining industrial video surveillance in hazardous classified areas. With an established track record since 2012, Spectrum has focused its expertise on developing explosion-proof cameras that meet international standards, and simplify complex processes such as installation and data transmission.

Addressing the real challenges of hazardous areas

Installing video surveillance systems in industrial areas classified as Class 1 Division 1 often involves high costs, long lead times and stringent national electrical code requirements. As Lee Rice explained, a conventional installation in these conditions can cost as much as $60,000.

Faced with this problem, Spectrum offers a disruptive alternative, consisting of cameras that can be installed in 30 minutes, thanks to the combination of wireless connectivity and its own cabling certified for hazardous environments. This solution significantly reduces both cost and complexity, making video surveillance viable in installations where it was previously technically or financially unfeasible.

User-oriented engineering

The products Spectrum presented at NISTM include a complete line of cameras for industrial applications: panoramic models, PTZ domes with no external moving parts, and units with 4G and 5G connectivity. All operate with Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, eliminating the need for high-voltage cables, making installation and maintenance even easier.

One of the most relevant points addressed in the interview was the concept of "explosion proof". Rice clarified that this term does not imply that the camera records images during an explosion, but rather that it is designed not to cause an internal explosion, containing it and safely dissipating the gases should one occur. Spectrum's cameras have been tested at pressures up to 600 PSI, far exceeding typical levels for an external explosion.

Artificial intelligence to make better decisions

Another of Rice's other highlights was the integration of artificial intelligence. Spectrum's cameras have become "super automation sensors" thanks to collaboration with technology partners specializing in AI. This makes it possible to offer advanced functionalities, such as pattern recognition or anomaly detection, tailored to the specific needs of each customer.

A clear proposal for the industry

With a practical, innovative and end-user focused approach, Spectrum Camera Solutions is setting out a new way of understanding industrial video surveillance. Under the leadership of Lee Rice, the company demonstrates that it is possible to combine advanced engineering with solutions that are affordable, secure and quick to deploy in environments where surveillance cannot fail.
