The United Kingdom Government has granted Morgan Offshore Wind Limited the authorization to develop a new offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea, thus strengthening its national strategy towards a cleaner and more secure energy matrix.
A large-scale energy project
The Morgan Offshore Wind project, located off the coast of Cumbria, involves the installation of up to 96 wind turbines, four offshore substations and a subsea interconnection network. It is estimated to generate 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, enough to cover the consumption of 1.5 million homes in the United Kingdom each year.
The power generated will be connected to the Penwortham substation in Lancashire through a transmission system shared with the Morecambe Offshore Wind Farm project, developed by Cobra and Flotation Energy.
International strategic alliance
Morgan Offshore Wind Limited is a consortium formed by JERA Nex bp and the German energy company Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW). Both companies have previously secured licenses for power generation and offshore leasing rights in the UK Round 4 award.
London-based JERA Nex bp combines the offshore expertise of JERA and BP in Asia-Pacific and the North Sea, while EnBW has more than 15 years of experience operating offshore wind farms in Europe and is engaged in a €40 billion investment plan through 2030 focused on renewables.
Contributing to national objectives
Morgan Offshore Wind joins the set of initiatives that seek to ensure a stable electricity supply, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
This wind farm is complemented by its sister project Mona Offshore Windalso under development by JERA Nex bp and EnBW, which received its authorization a few months ago. Both wind farms will be key to meeting the company’s decarbonization decarbonization targets of the UK electricity system.
