Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases(CE&IG) Group has closed a deal with a European engineering, procurement and construction(EPC) firm for the supply of twelve submerged cryogenic pumps for three liquefied natural gas carriers in the process of conversion to floating storage and regasification units(FSRUs).
The manufacture and installation of cryogenic submersible pumps
The pump systems were custom-designed to operate at high pressure, and manufactured by Nikkiso’s teams in North America. They will then be shipped to Asia for installation on selected vessels, which will then be deployed by European operators. Such technology will enable the safe and efficient transfer of LNG from the floating hull to the regasification system regasification system on board.
The FSRU model model has become an attractive solution for countries facing onshore infrastructure constraints. The units allow LNG to be stored in liquid form and regasified directly offshore. With the increasing demand for LNG as a transitional energy source, the market is projecting growth in ship conversions to FSRUs.
As part of its strategy to support the marine market, Nikkiso CE&IG has opened an office in Hamburg, Germany. This center will allow a more agile response to the technical and logistical requirements of European operators, consolidating the company’s position in cryogenic solutions for marine applications.
Ole Skatka-Jensen, Nikkiso CE&IG regional vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, noted that FSRUs allow existing fleets to quickly adapt to the demands of the new LNG market.
He also emphasized that the company’s expertise in boil-off gas management systems and vaporizers positions Nikkiso as a strategic partner for complex floating conversion projects.
