Quellaveco exceeds 1 million tons of copper and consolidates its technological leadership

The mine operated by Anglo American drives automated mining with renewable energy from southern Peru.
Mina Quellaveco

The Quellaveco mine has reached one million tons of copper produced since it began operations in 2022. This mark reflects the project’s installed capacity and the consolidation of a model of digital and responsible responsible mining model in South America.

The project, owned by Anglo American and located in Moquegua, was designed to reach an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons in its first decade. In 2023 and 2024, the mine has already surpassed that figure, and by 2025 production is estimated to be between 310,000 and 340,000 tons. This amount is enough to manufacture more than five million electric vehicles per year, positioning the deposit as a key player in the global energy transition.

Technology and clean electricity at Quellaveco as operating axes

Since its design, Quellaveco has incorporated high-level technological solutions. It is the first mine in Peru to operate with autonomous drilling and haulage fleets and haulage fleets, supported by a remote control center and advanced mineral processing systems. All this on a completely renewable energy base, which reinforces its low-emissions profile.

This combination of automation, energy efficiency and remote control has made it possible to operate with high standards of safety and reliability, setting a new benchmark in modern mining.

Strategic response to copper demand

The metal continues to gain prominence in the face of the advance of electrification and the need to reduce emissions. According to Anglo American’s projections, the world will require around 60 new mines the size of Quellaveco to meet demand by 2040.

The mine contributes to this goal and reinforces Peru’s role as a strategic supplier of copper. copper supplier of copper globally. With 36 years of projected useful life, state-of-the-art technology and clean energy, the mine consolidates its position as a model for future mining operations in the region.
