Shell and Sunlink to boost Nigeria’s deepwater gas megaproject

The HI project seeks to supply 350 million cubic feet of gas per day to the NLNG liquefaction plant at Bonny Island.
Shell lanza proyecto de gas offshore en Nigeria

Shell in Africa, through its subsidiary Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), and in partnership with Sunlink Energies and Resources Limited, has greenlighted the development of the HI field, an offshore gas project located in deep water off the coast of Nigeria.

Key supply for NLNG plant

The project contemplates a production capacity of up to 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to about 60 thousand barrels of oil equivalent. This volume will be used to supply Nigeria LNG (NLNG), one of the world’s leading liquefaction plants. liquefaction plants in the country Shell holds a 25.6% stake in the country’s main liquefaction plant.

The connection will be established via a subsea pipeline from the wellhead platform installed in the HI field to an onshore processing plant on Bonny Island. From there, the gas will be transported to NLNG and condensate to the hydrocarbon export terminal, also located at Bonny Island. also located at Bonny.

Offshore gas as part of a broader strategy

Discovered in 1985, the HI field currently holds some 285 million barrels of oil equivalent in recoverable resources. This new phase of development is part of Shell’s strategic vision to strengthen its presence in the global LNG market, with projected growth of between 4% and 5% per year in exported volumes until 2030.

This announcement comes on the heels of the final investment in Bonga North, another deepwater development in Nigeria, and reaffirms Shell’s commitment to strengthening the country’s energy sector, in line with its focus on integrated gas projects and upstream .

Economic impact and energy transition

In addition to contributing to energy supply, the HI project will generate direct and indirect jobs during the construction and operation phase. In parallel, it will support Nigeria’s efforts to consolidate its position as a key player in the international liquefied natural gas market.

From an environmental perspective, LNG is emerging as a lower impact option compared to more carbon-intensive fuels, which positions the project within the initiatives aligned with the global energy transition.

With this decision, Shell reaffirms its intention to maintain significant operations in Nigeria, focused on the responsible development of deepwater resources. deepwater resources and the expansion of its natural gas portfolio with a long-term vision.
