Uniper y Five Bioenergy cierran acuerdo de biometano en Europa

German energy company Uniper and Spanish developer Five Bioenergy have entered into a long-term biomethane agreement that reinforces their commitment to clean energy. The seven-year pact guarantees supply from three large plants located in the Region of Murcia, with deliveries expected to start in 2027.

This step represents a consolidation of Uniper’s efforts to expand its renewable energy portfolio. renewable and low-carbon and low-carbon energy portfolio, in line with the decarbonization objectives of sectors such as maritime and land transport.

Industrial scale biomethane

One of the cornerstones of the agreement is the Lorca Project, a facility designed to process up to one million tons of livestock waste per year. Its projected capacity reaches 250 GWh per year of biomethane, avoiding the emission of approximately 60,000 tons of CO₂. The start of operations is estimated for the end of 2026.

In addition to renewable gas, the project will generate by-products such as biofertilizers, biogenic CO₂ and treated water, reinforcing its value in a circular economy.

Strategic alliance and forward-looking biomethane agreement

Carsten Poppinga, commercial director of Uniper, highlighted that this agreement strengthens energy security through clean and diversified sources. The company seeks to accelerate its energy transition with products such as hydrogen and biomethane, key to its vision of a sustainable energy matrix.

From Five Bioenergy, its director Iván Copin underlined that this collaboration with Uniper offers commercial stability and validates its technological and industrial approach to large-scale biomethane production.

Shared vision for a sustainable Europe

With operations in more than 40 countries, Uniper strengthens its presence in southwest Europe with this move. Five Bioenergy, for its part, strengthens its leadership in the Iberian Peninsula with 17 projects under development and four under construction, all oriented to the sustainable production of energy from organic waste.

Both companies are positioned as key players in Europe’s energy transformation, committed to solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote regional energy independence.
