The Italian company Snam has signed an exclusivity agreement with the shareholders of Higas to initiate an evaluation process aimed at the full acquisition of the company and the transformation of its LNG terminal in Sardinia.

LNG terminal and energy infrastructure in Sardinia

With this operation, the company is studying and upgrading the existing coastal LNG storage located in Oristano into an LNG terminal (FSRU). This possible conversion aims to improve the local energy infrastructure and facilitate the continuous supply of natural gas in the region.

If the transaction is completed, the new FSRU would allow the injection of regasified natural gas into the future transmission network that will supply southern Sardinia, including the provinces of Cagliari, Oristano, Medio Campidano and Sulcis Iglesiente. The project also represents an important step forward in the island’s methanization process, with a planned storage capacity up to ten times greater than the current one.

During the exclusivity period, Snam will carry out technical and commercial analyses to define the feasibility of the project. The company sees this initiative as part of its strategy to strengthen the Italian energy system, especially in areas not yet fully connected to the national grid.

Floating regasification units have gained ground as an efficient solution to accelerate access to natural gas. In this case, the conversion of the Oristano plant would allow Sardinia to have a stable and scalable entry point for its energy needs, aligning with the objectives of decarbonization and energy diversification.
