The Greenvolt Group, through its subsidiary Greenvolt Power, was one of the main winners of Italy’s largest battery storage auction, organized by grid operator TERNA under the Mechanism for the Acquisition of Electrical Storage(MACSE).
The integration of battery storage
In the tender, aimed at boosting the stability of the Italian electricity system, Greenvolt was awarded a 15-year CPI-indexed contract for 499 MWh with its project located in the South and Calabria area, achieving a price above the average awarded in the region.
This project will have an estimated total capacity of 75 MW / 600 MWh, making it the company’s first 8-hour lithium-ion battery system and one of the largest long-duration storage projects in Europe. This achievement reaffirms the group’s commitment to the development of stand-alone BESSs that strengthen the electricity grid and facilitate greater integration of renewable energies.
The results of the process reflect the high interest and competitiveness of the market: 10 GWh of capacity were awarded against more than 40 GWh submitted. In the South and Calabria area, only three developers were selected, reaching the maximum allocation limit foreseen by TERNA.
We are very satisfied with the outcome of the Italian auction, which was achieved in a highly competitive context.
Batteries, a sector in which Greenvolt is a major European player, are essential to ensure grid stability at a time of strong expansion of renewable energies.
This 15-year contract represents a clear reinforcement of our operations in the Italian market.
João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group.
The MACSE auction is the first of three rounds planned until 2028, with the goal of reaching 70 GWh of operational capacity by 2030. With this award, Greenvolt strengthens its strategic presence in Italy, one of its markets, where local teams develop large-scale projects and distributed generation through Greenvolt Next.
Greenvolt Power currently has a total portfolio of 14.1 GW in 19 countries, including 4.7 GW of BESS projects. BESS projects projects, consolidating its position as one of Europe’s leading developers in storage, solar and wind power.
