The first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering in China was successfully achieved at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) shipyard. The initiative was led by CHI Shanghai and technically supported by Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore(BVS).
The ship-to-ship methanol bunkering operation
This refueling took place at the CHI Shanghai terminal, where the COSCO Shipping Libra vessel transferred 2,100 tons of methanol in 10 hours. This action represents a replicable model for future ship conversions to bi-fuel systems. bi-fuel systems and for methanol supply methanol supply projects. large scale methanol supply projects.
Bureau Veritas, through its consulting division BVS, carried out risk assessments at five essential stages of the process: from fuel inertization in trucks to the departure of the refueled vessel. In addition, HAZID and HAZOP methodologies were applied to ensure operational safety, with prior drills and technical training programs on methanol handling.
During the preparation phase, the shipyard cooperated with multiple stakeholders to validate the technical and legal feasibility of the operation. Moreover, regulatory compliance for 20,000 TEU methanol-powered container ships was assessed, improving the safety and sustainability standards required for this type of supply.
This operation demonstrates how collaboration and rigorous risk management make safe and efficient methanol refueling possible. We will continue to support the industry on its journey towards cleaner energy.
