The company Axpo advances in the green hydrogen project in Europe, after securing a 50% stake in the PtX Sines development, an essential initiative for the energy transition in the Iberian region. This strategic alliance is being carried out together with Winpower and will be located in the industrial and logistics zone of Sines, an area recognized for its energy and port potential.
The green hydrogen project in Europe
PtX Sines contemplates the installation of a 15 MW solar-powered electrolyzer, with the capacity to produce 2,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year. This resource can be injected into the Portuguese natural gas network, opening up the possibility of partially replacing fossil fuels in industrial and energy sectors.
The power supply for the project will be guaranteed through a power purchase agreement(PPA), which ensures cost stability and commitment to clean energy. PtX Sines has been recognized both as an Important Project of Common European Interest(IPCEI) and of national interest by the Portuguese government, which gives it institutional and financial backing.
According to Fridolin Roth, head of Axpo’s hydrogen area for Spain and Portugal, the project offers one of the most competitive production structures in Europe, with optimized costs and an export vision. The company plans to sell part of the hydrogen to industrial customers in Portugal and the rest of Europe, relying on certification systems that guarantee its sustainable origin.
Axpo’s Portuguese subsidiary, Goldenergy, will benefit directly from this development, as it will have access to hydrogen produced in Sines as an energy option to accelerate the decarbonization of its customers.
This area is positioning itself as a strategic hub for the development of the so-called Hydrogen Valley, an industrial ecosystem that seeks to integrate production, storage and distribution of renewable hydrogen. With this investment, Axpo is at the center of a network that aims to reconvert the energy model of southern Europe.
