The Grimaldi Group has added to its fleet the vessel “Grande Auckland”, a vehicle carrier vehicle carrier new-generation vehicle carrier that is distinguished by its future readiness to operate with ammonia as an alternative fuel.

The delivery ceremony took place in Shanghai, marking the addition of the second unit in a series of seven PCTCs (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) ordered from the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) shipyard, in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Trading Company (CSTC).

Efficient design and capacity of the Grande Auckland

With 200 meters in length, 38 meters in beam and a cargo capacity of up to 9,241 vehicles, the Grande Auckland is optimized for transporting cars, vans, electric SUVs and heavy commercial vehicles. Its four reinforced decks can accommodate large machinery, such as buses or excavators, with loads of up to 250 tons.

The vessel is powered by a MAN B&W engine, adapted to meet TIER II and TIER III standards. This propulsion plant, together with its hydrodynamic design, makes it possible to reduce CO₂ emissions per unit transported by up to 50% compared to previous models.

Prepared for the energy future

The Grande Auckland has received the “Ammonia Ready” certification from the Italian Naval Registry (RINA), confirming that it can be converted to operate with ammonia without carbon emissions when the infrastructure allows. In addition, its cold ironing system allows it to be connected to the port electrical grid, eliminating the use of fuels during port calls.

This type of technology positions the Grimaldi Group as one of the operators most committed to the decarbonization of maritime transport. decarbonization of international shipping. international shipping. The objective is clear: to integrate sustainable solutions without compromising logistics capacity.

Inaugural Asia-Europe Itinerary

The Grande Auckland began its maiden voyage from the Chinese ports of Shanghai and Lianyungang with a mixed cargo of 4,900 vehicles and 3,300 linear meters of rolling cargo. En route to Europe, she will call at Agadir and Tangier Med (Morocco), Vigo (Spain), Antwerp (Belgium) and Southampton (UK). It will then return to Asia, calling at La Réunion, Yokohama, Toyohashi and Masan.

The choice of the name pays tribute to the city of Auckland, New Zealand, which from 2023 is part of the shipping group’s regular routes. This gesture symbolizes the global expansion of its logistics services and the reinforcement of its intercontinental presence.
