The Salamanca town of Ciudad Rodrigo now has one of the most outstanding photovoltaic infrastructures in the northwest of the peninsula. Iberdrola has started the commissioning of its new solar plant. solar plantThis installation, with a total capacity of 316 megawatts, has the capacity to supply more than 155,000 homes with renewable electricity.

With this project, the company continues to strengthen its commitment to Castilla y León, where it already has the largest installed capacity in clean sources in the country.

The solar park, which covers 439 hectares between the Valdecarros and Torralba mountain ranges, required an investment of 200 million euros. During peak construction, the project generated up to 800 jobs, many of them through local companies.

Among the regional companies that participated were Tecinsa, in charge of the transformer substation; Solar B-Max, responsible for mechanical assembly; Pérez Coco, crane supplier; and others such as Montero, Sierra de Francia and Sánchez Cepa, which supplied concrete and aggregates. The supply chain also included Maderas Caeval, La Ilustración, La Serrana and Cubas Goyo, showing a high level of integration with the local economy.

In addition to its energetic function, the plant has been designed considering the natural environment. It includes actions such as the restoration of Habitats of Community Interest, the construction of a new pond for amphibians and the monitoring of the existing ones. Plant barriers, insect hotels and nest boxes for species such as the lesser kestrel will also be installed, as well as shelters for native fauna.

In the cultural field, Iberdrola has reached an agreement with the City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo to intervene in the accesses to the Cathedral. It has also sponsored the educational and scientific project “Astróbriga”, a scale replica of the solar system installed in the region.

The collaboration with the sovereign wealth fund Norges Bank reinforces the international component of the project. This financial backing supports Iberdrola’s green growth strategy in Spain, focused on initiatives that combine renewable generation with a positive impact on the territory.

The company currently has six solar facilities in the community, distributed between Palencia, Burgos and Salamanca, with a total of 890 MW in operation. The region is also home to the country’s first hybrid wind-solar plant in Ballestas and Casetona, reaffirming its role in the energy transition. energy transition.
