The energy company TotalEnergies and the transport and logistics group CMA CGM announced the creation of a joint venture to operate a comprehensive service for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) (LNG) bunkering service in the port of Rotterdam.

The alliance aims to expand the supply infrastructure in the ARA (Antwerp-Rotterdam-Amsterdam) region and accelerate the decarbonization of shipping in Europe.

TotalEnergies and CMA CGM to expand LNG logistics

The new venture, in which both companies will have equal stakes, will deploy an LNG bunker vessel with a capacity of 20,000 m³ by the end of 2028. This will be in addition to the operation of the Gas Agility vessel, which TotalEnergies has been active in Rotterdam since 2020. The aim is to offer greater flexibility in the delivery of fuel to LNG-powered ships. LNG-powered vessels, including those of CMA CGMLNG-powered vessels, including those of CMA CGM and third-party operators.

The company will also be backed by a supply agreement that guarantees up to 360,000 tons of LNG per year. up to 360,000 tons per year of LNG for the CMA CGM fleet from 2028 to 2040. This fleet will consist of more than 120 dual-fuel vesselsrepresenting the logistics group’s commitment to alternative fuels such as biomethane and green methanol.

Rotterdam as a hub of the energy transition

TotalEnergies and CMA CGM thus consolidate their long-standing collaboration on LNG as a marine fuel. The port of Rotterdam is emerging as a hub for refueling and bunkering operations at a key moment in the transformation of the shipping industry.

The use of LNG reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% compared to traditional marine fuels, and improves air quality by minimizing the emission of sulfur oxides and fine particulates. The joint venture reinforces the commitment of both companies to cleaner and more efficient logistics, and underlines the role of LNG as a viable option for the immediate decarbonization of maritime transport.
