On July 14, the KEYS Azalea successfully executed the first ship-to-ship LNG refueling for a cruise ship in Japan, fueling the ASUKA III at the Chuo dock of Hakata Port.
Progress in the supply of LNG to cruise ships
The ASUKA III, managed by NYKis equipped with engines that operate on multiple fuels, including LNG. Such hybrid capability allows for minimizing sulfur and CO₂ emissions, aligning with the industry’s decarbonization goals.
The KEYS Azalea, owned by KEYS Bunkering West Japan, had experience supplying LNG to bulk carriers and car carriers. However, this was its first foray into supplying cruise ships.
With shareholders such as Kyushu Electric Power, NYK Line, ITOCHU ENEX and Saibu Gas, KEYS Bunkering West Japan establishes itself as a strategic supplier in the LNG supply network in Japan. In addition, its vision focuses on ensuring safe and consistent deliveries, supporting the creation of a carbon neutral economy.
The July 14 operation represents a technical improvement and a clear sign of the sustainable direction passenger shipping is taking in Asia.
