These new ships, known as “Project Evolution”, will operate using three power sources: a fuel cell system, battery technology and dual-fuel engines using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as the primary fuel.
Icon of the Seas will be the first of three LNG-powered cruise line ships, this hybrid innovation in the cruise industry, allowing the ship to eliminate emissions while in port.
This hybrid solution, which uses fuel cell technology, allows the ship to be free of local emissions while in port, another first in the industry.
“Silversea’s newest class of ships is a major step forward in our commitment to sustainable ship design and our process of reducing our environmental footprint,” said Richard Fain, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group.
“The addition of fuel cells to our ships now is an example of how Royal Caribbean Group is preparing to employ new technologies as we move toward a non-carbon future. This pioneering approach builds on our spirit of innovation.” Fain pointed out.
This new hybrid technology allows Project Evolution to achieve an overall 40% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions per double room. These state-of-the-art ships are also expected to achieve an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) approximately 25% better than applicable International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements.
