Port Marlborough and Damen Shipyards have joined forces with the signing of a contract for the delivery of a new tug type ASD 2312, which will operate in the port of Picton, New Zealand.
ASD 2312 tug technology
The ASD 2312 stands out for its compact design, with a length of about 23 meters, and an impressive 70-ton fixed point pulling capacity. In addition, it has an azimuthal propulsion system and the patented Damen Twin Fin twin keel gives it a high degree of maneuverability, ideal for operations in docks and narrow channels.
As part of Damen’s Compact Tugs series, the new tug integrates solutions focused on crew safety, such as 360-degree visibility from the wheelhouse and a clear deck. In addition, it has a unique multipurpose winch located inside a deckhouse, providing protection from adverse weather.
Moreover, this vessel integrates an auxiliary electrical generation system that optimizes fuel consumption and operating emissions. It is also equipped with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system developed by Damen. Damenwhich reduces nitrogen oxide emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 80(NOx) emissions by up to 80%, aligning with International Maritime Organization Tier III regulations.
We are proud to invest in the future capacity of our port with a second modern tugboat.
Partnering again with Damen gives us access to cutting-edge technology that improves the safety, performance and reliability of our towing services.
Rhys Welbourn, executive director of PMNZ.
This is the second tug to be delivered to Port Marlborough by Damen, following the Kaiana(ASD 2111) in 2024. With this new addition, the port authority establishes itself as the operator of the most modern tug fleet in the country. The vessel will be named Kaiaua, in recognition of an ecological site of significance to the indigenous Te Ātiawa o te Waka a Maui community.
We are very pleased to receive this order for a second Damen tug from PMNZ.
The organization is taking a very proactive approach to securing the future of its fleet, investing not only in improving the performance of its vessels, but also in greater sustainability beyond what is strictly necessary.
This commitment to environmental stewardship aligns closely with the values we uphold at Damen, ensuring a fruitful and rewarding cooperation between the two companies.
Pim Schuurman, Damen’s Regional Sales Manager for New Zealand.
