The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officially approved Dominion Energy’s request to extend the operating license of the VC Summer nuclear plant, located in South Carolina, for another 20 years. With this renewal, the unit will be able to continue operating until 2062.
VC Summer nuclear power plant operations
The VC Summer plant, located in Fairfield County, has been operating since 1982 as a Westinghouse-type pressurized water reactor. Its 966 megawatts of power can supply more than 240,000 homes with emission-free energy. This extension is an essential part of the energy transition plans in the southeastern United States.
Dominion Energy has reinforced its commitment to the safety and maintenance of the facility. Recent improvements include the replacement of the main transformer and an ongoing technical modernization strategy. These actions are intended to ensure efficient operation throughout the life of the plant.
The plant also represents an important economic contribution to Fairfield County, where it generates annual tax revenues in excess of $33 million. It also supports various community initiatives in the region.
Dominion Energy’s future plans
With this extension, VC Summer joins other company-operated plants that have already received similar renewals, such as Surry and North Anna. Dominion also plans to apply for the license extension for Millstone Power Station in Connecticut, which reinforces its long-term strategy based on carbon-free nuclear power.
Approval by the NRC solidifies VC Summer’s role as an essential source of stable, clean and consistent electricity for South Carolina’s growth.
