QuantumScape has taken a strategic step in the evolution of its operations by integrating the Cobra process into the base production of its solid-state lithium-metal lithium-metal solid-state battery cells. This marks a substantial improvement over previous methods and reinforces the company’s move towards large-scale commercialization of its technologies.

About Cobra: the QuantumScape process

Cobra replaces the Raptor system previously used by QuantumScape to manufacture ceramic separators, essential components in solid-state cells. Cobra not only increases the speed of heat treatment by a factor of 25, but also significantly reduces the space required per unit processed. This is key to scaling up production within a gigafactory.

In addition to increased throughput, Cobra consumes fewer operating resources, contributing to reduced equipment usage and a smaller environmental footprint. This operational efficiency enables continuous production with greater stability and lower costs.

Acceleration of production

With Cobra as a base, the company plans to accelerate the production of its B1 cells, which represent an evolution of the current B0 cells. This transition will facilitate the validation of industrial processes for volume production, an essential step in order to reach commercial agreements with electric vehicle manufacturers.

QuantumScape CEO Siva Sivaram noted that Cobra not only improves performance, but represents a cleaner and more efficient technical platform, positioning the company on a solid path to industrialization. Tim Holme, the company’s CTO, called the technology a remarkable leap forward in ceramic battery development.

The company anticipates that future versions of the Cobra process will continue to improve production metrics in both speed and stability. This technological evolution is part of its strategy to lead the energy storage market with high energy density batteries and shorter charge cycles.
