Seaspan Energy successfully completed the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering to a car carrier(PCTC) at the Port of Long Beach.
First LNG fueling of car carriers in Long Beach
On June 12, the vessel Seaspan Baker completed the transfer of LNG to the Plumeria Leader, a PCTC operated by NYK Line and powered by clean energy. This operation represents the first time this type of supply has been made to a car carrier on the U.S. West Coast.
The collaboration between Seaspan Energy, NYK Line and the Port of Long Beach highlights a common vision: to decarbonize shipping and provide sustainable solutions at the operational level. NYK emphasized that these initiatives are key to maintaining operational excellence and advancing the energy transition.
The implementation of LNG reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 27% during the fuel’s life cycle. It also reduces particulate matter, NOx and SOx emissions, which directly benefits air quality in port cities such as Long Beach, Seattle and Vancouver.
With a fleet that includes three supply vessels and several successful operations supplying container ships, cruise ships and tankers, Seaspan Energy continues to expand its capabilities in North America.
