Versalis starts up chemical recycling plant with Hoop® technology

This is the only large-scale Italian project to receive funding from the EU Innovation Fund in 2023.

The future of chemical recycling in Italy takes a firm step forward with the entry into operation of the demonstration plant of Versalis, a chemical subsidiary of Enis chemical subsidiary, in Mantua. The new complex uses Hoop® technology, developed in conjunction with the Italian firm SRS, to transform mixed plastic waste into secondary raw materials suitable for new plastics applications.

Pyrolysis technology adapted to the future

The plant is designed to process up to 6,000 tons per year using a high thermal efficiency pyrolysis reactor. Thanks to integrated artificial intelligence models, pressure and temperature conditions are adjusted according to the composition of the waste, maximizing process performance.

The result is a pyrolysis oil that can replace fossil feedstock in the manufacture of ethylene and propylene and meets the standards for use in food and pharmaceutical packaging.

The SC-Hoop project does not stop in Mantua. The design of an industrial plant in Priolo (Sicily), with a projected capacity of 40,000 tons per year, is already underway. The final investment decision is expected to be taken in 2026 for start-up between the end of 2028 and the beginning of 2029.

This development is part of Eni-Versalis “Chemical Eni-Versalis” Chemical Transformation Plan focused on promoting the circular economy and industrial specialization.

A chemical recycling plant with European recognition

The Mantua plant is the only large-scale Italian project funded under the 2023 call of the European Union Innovation Fund. In addition, Hoop’s patent has been selected by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy to represent Italy at Expo 2025 in Osaka.
