The plants located in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, were acquired by the CH4T biomethane platform in 2024, following a rigorous technical and territorial selection. The modernization of these plants will allow the biomethane generated to be injected directly into the Italian gas grid, within the framework of the FiP (Feed-in Premium) system, thus ensuring stable revenues for the next 15 years.
Conversion of seven biogas plants to biomethane
With this modernization process, the plants are expected to reach an annual production capacity of more than 295 GWh, which will prevent the emission of more than 85,400 tons of CO₂ per year. In addition, this project will help to valorize 401,865 tons of agricultural and livestock by-products, contributing directly to the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of the industry.
BBVA bank has not only led the structuring of the financing, but has also played an essential role in backing this sustainable initiative. Karla Ceño, executive director of Project Finance and CleanTech at BBVA, highlighted the importance of this project, noting that it reflects the bank’s commitment to financing clean technologies and the energy transition. “We are proud to support projects like CH4T, which not only promote decarbonization, but also favor energy resilience in Europe,” said Ceño.
CH4T, headquartered in Verona, specializes in the conversion of biogas into state-of-the-art biomethane into state-of-the-art biomethane. This platform is part of the SC Infra portfolio of Suma Capital, a fund that has established itself as a major player in the field of sustainable investment in Europe. For Ruperto Unzué, partner of Suma Capital, this project marks a milestone in the platform’s growth, reaffirming its leadership in the biomethane sector in Italy.
