The Swiss company MET Group has taken a key step in its decarbonization strategy with the commissioning of the largest battery energy storage system in Hungary. The plant, located at the thermal power plant Dunamenti thermal power plant, has an installed capacity of 40 MW and a total storage capacity of 80 MWh, equivalent to a two-hour charging cycle.

Dunamenti launches BESS system

This BESS system (Battery Energy Storage System) aims to reinforce the stability of the Hungarian power grid and enable a higher penetration of renewable energies in the energy mix. The new project is in addition to a 4 MW / 8 MWh pilot plant installed by MET in 2022, consolidating the Dunamenti power plant as a key node in the deployment of storage technologies.

The main technology supplier was Huawei Technologies, while Forest-Vill Ltd., a specialist in energy projects, was responsible for the execution of the project. energy projects in Central in Central Europe. The installation The installation can supply all of Budapest’s lighting needs for four hours, illustrating the magnitude for four hours, illustrating its scale and potential for urban application.

Hungarian leaders endorse the use of batteries

During the inauguration, Peter Horváth, general manager of the Dunamenti plant, emphasized that the incorporation of battery storage is an indispensable tool for integrating renewable sources in an efficient and sustainable manner.

For his part, Péter Kaderják, president of the Hungarian Battery Association, stressed the importance of using mature and cost-effective technologies to maximize the use of local renewable resources.

With operations in 17 countries and a portfolio ranging from natural gas to green electricity, MET continues to expand in the storage arena. In 2024, it acquired the French firm Comax, which specializes in battery systems, and is currently promoting solutions co-located with solar farms in different European countries.
