Within the framework of PANNDT, one of the most relevant events in the world of non-destructive testing, Inspenet had the opportunity to talk with Heather Cowles, executive director of the ASNT Foundation. Cowles shared the key objectives of the organization that she leads, as well as the strategies they implement to strengthen the global presence of the NDT sector.
A foundation with a clear purpose
The ASNT Foundation is distinct from the main body of the ASNT in its philanthropic and knowledge-building focus. While ASNT is focused on certifications, standards and professional training, the Foundation focuses on scholarships, research grants and generating opportunities for new talent. The focus is on understanding market needs, assessing the demand for jobs in the sector, and funding projects that drive real advances in inspection and technology.
Training and opportunities for NDT talent
One of the most solid pillars of the ASNT Foundation is the comprehensive support for the training of new talent and the technological development of the sector, actively supporting students and young researchers by offering travel grants for master’s and doctoral students involved in technical research. These funds not only cover tuition and training, but also allow attendance at conferences and integration into key professional networks.
At the same time, the foundation promotes volunteering as a means of personal and professional growth, providing students and young professionals with opportunities to collaborate in events and activities, developing leadership and communication skills that complement their technical training.
This commitment to training is complemented by the promotion of applied research. Through sectoral studies, the foundation evaluates the evolution of the labor market and emerging technical competencies, identifying training gaps and strategically orienting resources. In addition, funding to universities and specialized centers allows the development of innovative projects in inspection, characterization of materials and new techniques, thus strengthening technology transfer to industry.

Global projection and strategic events
During the interview, Cowles also extended an invitation to the global community to attend the annual ASNT 2025 Conference in October. As part of that meeting, the foundation’s third annual golf tournament will be held, a recreational event with proceeds going directly to fund scholarships and educational programs.
These types of initiatives reinforce the inclusive nature of the foundation, which seeks to generate connections in an informal environment but with a strong impact on fundraising for the NDT sector.
A supported path to a sustainable career
Heather Cowles’ vision for the future of the ASNT Foundation is to be the structural support for those choosing a career in NDT. From talent spotting to providing concrete tools for training, the foundation acts as a catalyst for career paths globally.
I think we will be, again, very important in creating those pathways and also backing them up with the support and funding that they will need to continue on a path and really make a career in NDT.
Heather Cowles.
The work of the ASNT Foundation represents a commitment to the future of the NDT sector; a commitment that combines research, inclusion and human development to ensure quality, safety and innovation in nondestructive testing on a global scale.
