Baker Hughes to lead well abandonment operations in the Oseberg East field

Baker Hughes has been selected by Equinor to carry out an integrated plugging and abandonment(P&A) campaign in the Oseberg East field in the North Sea. This award consolidates the company’s position as one of the main references in technologies for the decommissioning of offshore wells.

As part of the agreement, the Baker Hughes Mature Asset Solutions team will take the lead in both the planning and execution of the operation. This approach allows complete control of every phase of the process, from initial appraisal to final well closure. final decommissioning of the well. The Norwegian company, Equinor, seeks to increase operational efficiency and minimize costs in the decommissioning of offshore wells through this collaboration.

To support this campaign, Baker Hughes will establish a P&A Center of Excellence in the Norwegian cities of Bergen and Stavanger. This hub will bring together technical experts and project managers with the aim of optimizing each intervention. The centralization of knowledge aims to ensure reliable and sustainable solutions across the Norwegian continental shelf.

The execution of the project is supported by tools and technologies patented by Baker Hughes. These include PRIME mechanical applications, the CICM system for casing integrity assessment and cementing, MASTODON equipment for pipe recovery and the Xtreme SJI mechanical slotting tool.Planning is already underway and well work is scheduled to start in 2026.

This contract is part of a multi-year framework agreement signed in March 2025 between the two companies. The objective is to establish a replicable operating model that will allow Equinor to advance its strategy of responsible well abandonment in compliance with Norwegian environmental and regulatory standards.
