The Swiss company Meyer Burger abruptly stopped the production of solar modules at its plant located in Goodyear, Arizona. The closure directly affects 282 employees who were notified of the layoff on May 29. The decision ends the operation of a facility with an annual capacity of 1.4 gigawatts that had been conceived as a strategic pillar of local solar energy production. solar energy production in the USA.

The shutdown in the production of solar modules

The suspension is attributed to the lack of access to public funds promised under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentives, which sought to strengthen clean technology manufacturing within the country. For its part, Meyer Burger had planned a gradual expansion of its U.S. infrastructure, but the delay in the allocation of federal aid has undermined its operational viability.

For now, the future of the plant remains uncertain. The company confirmed that it is still in talks with a group of bondholders to redefine the terms of two convertible bonds maturing in 2027 and 2029. These financial instruments were issued by its subsidiary MBT Systems GmbH and are backed by Meyer Burger Technology AG.

Although the company has not announced the definitive dismantling of the plant, the immediate shutdown of production indicates that it faces a prolonged period of restructuring. This situation increases uncertainty about the fate of solar manufacturing initiatives that depend on sustained government support to compete with Asian production.
