Amazon-backed company Zoox has issued a precautionary recall of its robotaxi following an incident in Las Vegas, where a driverless test vehicle collided slightly with a private car. Although there were no injuries, the event triggered the company’s internal safety and transparency protocols.
The immediate decision following the incident with the robotaxi
The crash involved a vehicle without passengers and another conventional vehicle that stopped unexpectedly. The autonomous system attempted to maneuver to avoid the impact, but failed to stop in time. As an immediate response, all driverless operations were stopped and a technical investigation was launched to determine the cause of the failure.
Zoox filed a recall report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), in compliance with current regulations. This procedure is part of the company’s commitment to the regulation of autonomous mobility technologies and the continuous improvement of its systems.
The analysis of the incident identified a specific behavior of the system, which was corrected by a software upgrade. This upgrade has been implemented in all test vehicles and in the transport model developed by Zoox.
