Waymo, the autonomous driving division of Alphabet, and Toyota Motor Corporation are evaluating a potential collaboration with a view to integrating their capabilities to drive the development of autonomous cars next-generation autonomous cars. The main objective of this partnership would be to accelerate the adoption of safe and efficient technologies applied to personal vehicles.
Personal autonomous cars with shared technology
The alliance considers the key contribution of Woven by Toyota, a unit dedicated to innovation in innovation in mobility of the Japanese manufacturer. This unit will contribute advanced software and mobility solutions, while Waymo will provide its expertise in autonomous controllers already tested in complex urban environments such as San Francisco and Phoenix.
The joint approach is aimed at a new platform of vehicles integrating autonomous capabilities and driver assistance systems. The companies seek to design automobiles capable of operating under a reliable automated system, applicable to multiple models for private and commercial use.
Commitment to road safety
Toyota has sustained a decades-long commitment to accident reduction through initiatives such as Toyota Safety Sense. This collaboration reinforces that objective by combining advances in vehicle intelligence with operational data generated by Waymo, whose vehicles have demonstrated up to 81% fewer injury crashes versus human reference models.
Waymo continues to expand its presence with its commercial service Waymo Onecommercial service, while it plans to adapt its technology for new partners. With Toyota, it intends to open a new front in private vehicles that could scale globally. The two companies are in talks to define the final scope of the agreement.
