With the aim of strengthening the island’s energy independence and decarbonizing strategic sectors, Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech have signed a key agreement for the supply and installation of a 1 MW electrolyzer in the town of Giammoro, in the province of Messina. This device, based on anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology, will allow the production of more than 500 kg of green hydrogen. green hydrogen per day.
The initiative is part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and is financially supported by the NextGenerationEU program and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) through the Region of Sicily. The system will be installed on a new production line located in Genova Campi.
This is how the new electrolyzer will work
In addition, the electrolyzer will be powered by solar energy generated by a photovoltaic photovoltaic plant 4 MW photovoltaic plant, which will guarantee an estimated annual production of 100 tons of clean hydrogen with a purity of 99.9%.
The hydrogen generated will be used mainly in sectors such as steel, logistics and mobility, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions in industries that are difficult to decarbonize. The operation represents a step forward in building a sustainable ecosystem in southern Italy.
Massimo Croci, CEO of Duferco Energia, stated that this development reinforces Sicily’s role in the energy transition, assuring that the project has the potential to combine environmental sustainability with industrial development and local employment.
Vittorio Olcese, CEO of Ansaldo Green Tech, noted that this agreement validates the efficiency and versatility of AEM technology applied to green hydrogen production.
Giammoro’s Hydrogen Valley is aligned with the European Union’s RePowerEU plan, which aims to reduce energy dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the implementation of renewable solutions. With a total investment of 10 million euros, the project aims to position itself as a reference for other European regions.
