RWE and PPC launch new 567 MWp solar parks in Greece

Two new solar parks will increase renewable energy capacity in Central Macedonia with European financial support.
Confirman proyectos solares de 567 MWp en Grecia

RWE and PPC, through their joint venture Meton Energy SA, have confirmed the construction of two new large-scale solar parks in northern Greece . The investment decision secures a total capacity of 567 megawatts peak (MWp), consolidating the country’s progress toward a cleaner energy mix.

An investment in solar projects backed by Europe

With a total investment of €418 million, the project will benefit from €175 million from the NextGenerationEU mechanism within the “Greece 2.0” plan. The remainder will be financed through commercial debt and shareholder contributions, underscoring institutional confidence in renewable energy as an economic driver.

The Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar farms will be built between 2025 and 2026 , and are expected to be operational in 2027. The projected annual generation will cover the energy needs of more than 140,000 Greek homes, representing a significant step in reducing emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Continued expansion of the RWE-PPC alliance

Since the creation of Meton Energy, RWE Renewables Europe & Australia (51%) and PPC Renewables (49%) have activated five solar plants totaling 210 MWp. In addition, other projects already built or under development will increase total capacity to more than 1.5 GWp in the coming years.

To ensure financial viability, Meton Energy has signed ten-year bilateral power purchase agreements (PPAs) with PPC and RWE Supply & Trading. This model guarantees long-term stability for the solar parks and strengthens the domestic supply of renewable electricity.

Central Macedonia: New energy axis

The prefecture of Central Macedonia thus joins Western Macedonia, where other projects are already underway on former lignite mines. This conversion of industrial land reflects a territorial recovery strategy aligned with Greece’s climate commitments.

The expansion of solar energy is advancing in Greece thanks to strategic partnerships and a clear focus on sustainability and energy independence.
