The collaboration between Galp and Powin has begun the installation of a large-scale battery energy storage system in Alcoutim, a small town located in the sunny Algarve region of southern Portugal.

The energy storage system in Alcoutim

The project focuses on a 5 MW/20 MWh storage system at the Galp solar park in Alcoutim. This capacity will allow solar energy to be stored during periods of high generation for later use during peak demand.

With this initiative, the company is promoting hybridization with its solar energy technology, which currently accounts for nearly 1.5 GW of solar power in operation on the Iberian Peninsula.

With the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy production, the introduction of storage is of utmost importance for the stability and sustainability of the electricity system.

On the other hand, Powin is taking its first step into the European market with this project. With the recent opening of its office in Madrid, Spain, the company seeks to establish itself as a leader in the growth of energy storage in the EMEA region ( Europe, the Middle East, and Africa ).

As part of its energy transition strategy, Galp has made the final investment decision to develop one of the largest green hydrogen electrolyzers in Europe.

In addition, it is building an advanced biofuels unit with a capacity of 270 ktpa. These developments, coupled with the expansion of its electric vehicle charging network, demonstrate the Portuguese company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the energy sector.

This project represents a fundamental step in Powin’s international expansion and a response to the growing demand for energy storage solutions in Europe.

This Alcoutim project is the start of a series of initiatives to boost energy storage in Europe, a market that is poised to expand rapidly in the coming years. With the support of companies like Galp and Powin , Europe is making progress toward achieving its energy transition and economic decarbonization goals.
