AFC Energy has announced the launch of Hy-5 , the world’s first containerized portable hydrogen cracking module . This technology will be available starting in 2026 and will have the capacity to produce up to 500 kg of hydrogen per day, representing decentralized hydrogen production without the need for complex electrical infrastructure or additional renewable energy sources.

The Hy-5 is offered under a “fuel as a service” ( FaaS ) model, enabling hydrogen production at a surprisingly low cost of just £10 per kilogram, far below current market prices. According to the company’s data, this cost is lower even than government-subsidized products, potentially radically changing the dynamics of the hydrogen market .
Lack of infrastructure and the high cost of hydrogen production are considered the biggest challenges to the growth of the hydrogen industry.
With the launch of Hy-5, AFC Energy has eliminated these, offering on-site supply at a market-disrupting price.

This ammonia cracking module aims to be a viable option from both an economic and a technical perspective. The Hy-5 produces hydrogen with a purity greater than 99.9% in accordance with ISO 14687 grade D , making it fully compatible with AFC Energy’s S and S+ hydrogen fuel cell generators.
Furthermore, energy consumption for hydrogen production is extremely efficient, with a low consumption of 9.5 kWh/kg , thus optimizing the sustainability of the process. This technical advancement addresses a real need across multiple industries.
The Hy-5 is presented as a solution in sectors such as off-grid energy , hydrogen refueling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, refueling of heavy machinery in construction, and electric vehicle charging .
