The Portuguese Navy continues to advance its modernization process by incorporating the MAN 175D engine into several of its new shipbuilding projects. These high-speed engines will be essential for propelling multipurpose and offshore patrol vessels, strengthening the fleet’s operational and security capabilities.

The Damen Shipyard Group , based in the Netherlands, has ordered several MAN 175D engines for its upcoming multi-purpose vessel ( MPV ). The 107-meter-long vessel will be used in a variety of missions, including ocean research, search and rescue operations, and naval support. With a platform designed for large-scale missions, the Portuguese Navy’s MPV will be a vital tool for tackling maritime challenges or complex operations.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese shipyard West Sea has received an order for six offshore patrol vessels ( OPVs ), which will also be equipped with MAN 175D engines. These OPVs are designed for maritime surveillance and patrol, offering exceptional performance and high operational efficiency, ensuring responsiveness to security and defense missions.
Each engine can generate up to 6 MW of power, ensuring rapid maneuverability, high acceleration, and high-temperature resistance. Furthermore, the engines are capable of operating on 100% FAME fuels and are methanol -ready, making them a sustainable and cutting-edge option.
With the addition of MAN engines , the Portuguese Navy is improving its operational capability, while also enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of its naval operations. These engines will be essential for maritime patrols, rescue missions, and operations in maritime conflict zones, where high maneuverability and speed are required.
