The Sofia offshore wind farm , developed by RWE on the Dogger Bank, UK, has made significant progress in its construction. The company is preparing to install the first wind turbines in the coming weeks and plans to generate electricity later this year.
Infrastructure progress with the installation of wind turbines
To date, more than half of the wind turbine foundations have been installed, along with the offshore converter station and onshore substation. Furthermore, both onshore and offshore export cables are already in place. This progress puts the project on track with the established deadlines.
Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE’s offshore wind energy, said Sofia is the company’s largest offshore wind development globally and that the project remains on budget.
This progress reflects the experience of our team and the strong support of our supply chain.
He assured.
Innovation and sustainability
The farm will feature Siemens Gamesa wind turbines , including 150 recyclable blades that will be installed on 50 of the 100 turbines. These blades, manufactured in Hull, represent a step forward in reducing the environmental impact of the wind industry. According to Marc Becker, Siemens Gamesa’s offshore director, ” Sofia will be the first wind farm in the UK to incorporate this innovation .”

In addition, the Cadeler-built Wind Peak installation vessel has arrived to begin installing the first turbine components . With a lifting capacity of over 17,600 tons and a main crane capable of lifting over 2,600 tons, this vessel optimizes the installation process and minimizes costs and carbon emissions.
Economic and energy impact
Energy Minister Michael Shanks stressed that Sofia will power more than a million homes and that its £6 billion investment is key to the UK’s energy security.
This project not only drives the transition to clean energy, but also strengthens the local economy.
He stressed.
With the installation of the first turbine on the horizon and power generation expected by the end of 2025, Sofia strengthens RWE’s role in the global energy transition , consolidating its position as a leader in innovation and sustainability in the offshore wind sector.
