Petrobras has confirmed that tests at Sirius-2 , including the drilling test (DST), in the well located in the Guajira Offshore basin , in deep waters of Colombia, have yielded positive results in productivity . The Brazilian company, together with Ecopetrol, is evaluating the magnitude of this discovery, which could be consolidated as a strategic pillar in the country’s gas production.
Sirius-2 test results and reserve potential
During the test, which covered a 100-meter interval of the reservoir, samples were collected that will be subjected to laboratory analysis. According to Petrobras, these preliminary results reinforce the volumetric potential in the region, with gas estimates exceeding 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The Sirius-2 well is located 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast, with a water depth of 804 meters, within the GUA-OFF-0 block. Its drilling has been key to confirming the viability of deepwater exploration and the increase of gas reserves in the country.
Impact on the energy industry
This discovery represents a step forward for Colombia’s energy security, as it could increase current gas reserves by 200% . It also strengthens the country’s energy diversification strategy amid the transition to more sustainable sources.
The National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) has highlighted the importance of this assessment, which will allow defining the next steps in exploration and eventual commercial production.
Future plans and commitment to offshore exploration
Petrobras operates the consortium through its subsidiary Petrobras International Braspetro BV – Sucursal Colombia (PIB-COL), with a 44.44% stake , while Ecopetrol holds 55.56% . Both companies will continue to evaluate the results of Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 to determine the feasibility of a large-scale development.
The success of this well underlines the potential of the Guajira Offshore Basin as a key area for Colombia’s energy future. Petrobras and Ecopetrol have reiterated their commitment to responsible exploration and compliance with contractual obligations with the ANH.
With these findings, the country could position itself as a key player in gas production in the region. Analysis will continue in the coming months to confirm the full scope of this discovery and define its impact on national energy supply.
