The Teatro Real inaugurated its new solar roof . The Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, together with the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, have highlighted the importance of this transformation that turns the emblematic building into a benchmark for energy efficiency and self-consumption.
A historic building with clean energy
With the installation of 2,198 solar panels , the Teatro Real will generate 190 MWh per year, allowing a significant reduction in its carbon footprint. This development is part of a set of improvements financed with 5.3 million euros from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
Thanks to these actions, the building has managed to improve its energy certification from rating D to A, reflecting almost zero energy consumption.
The project is part of the Energy Transition Plan in the General State Administration (AGE), whose objective is the decarbonisation of the state real estate stock before 2050. The reforms include the optimisation of air conditioning systems , replacement of cooling units and heat pumps, as well as the implementation of LED lighting in different areas of the theatre.
Environmental benefits and energy efficiency of solar roofs
The measures adopted will allow savings of 1.5 GWh per year, equivalent to avoiding the emission of 263 tons of CO2. Minister Aagesen stressed that this initiative is a replicable model for other historic buildings seeking to adapt to new energy requirements without compromising their architectural value.
In addition to being a cultural landmark, the Teatro Real has become the first Cultural Interest Asset in Spain to obtain an Energy Saving Certificate (CAE) . This recognition underlines its commitment to the energy transition and sustainability, demonstrating that it is possible to combine heritage and efficiency.
