TERNA ENERGY, a subsidiary of the GEK TERNA Group and owned by Masdar, has announced a new strategic investment in Bulgaria with the construction of a 130 MW photovoltaic solar plant in the Burgas region.

A solar plant for the energy transition

Located in Vratitsa, the PV plant will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. The development plan includes the installation of a new 33/110 kV substation, ensuring an efficient connection to the Bulgarian power grid.

Construction will be carried out by TERNA SA , the engineering and construction arm of the GEK TERNA Group, as part of its collaboration with Masdar. The partnership between the two companies reinforces their commitment to sustainable growth and the reduction of carbon emissions in the region.

Expansion and leadership in renewable energy

TERNA ENERGY is already operating in Bulgaria with two wind farms with a combined installed capacity of 30 MW . With this new development, the company is strengthening its presence in the country and consolidating its investment strategy in large-scale renewable projects.

This solar park will increase the production of clean energy in Bulgaria and will contribute to the diversification of its energy matrix and the security of electricity supply. In addition, it is estimated that the plant will avoid the emission of thousands of tons of CO₂ annually, in line with the climate objectives of the European Union.

Masdar and GEK TERNA: Drivers of energy transformation

Masdar, a leader in renewable energy and majority owner of TERNA ENERGY, has stepped up its investments in solar and wind projects globally. The collaboration with GEK TERNA in Bulgaria represents a model of strategic partnership for the development of sustainable energy infrastructure.

With a vision focused on innovation and efficiency, this project reaffirms the commitment of both companies to decarbonisation and the promotion of green energy in Europe. This investment in Burgas is expected to be a benchmark in the sector and a catalyst for new renewable energy initiatives in the region.
