Amazon Web Services ( AWS ) has announced the launch of Ocelot , a new quantum computing chip that promises to revolutionize quantum error correction, reducing costs by up to 90% and driving the creation of fault-tolerant quantum computers. This development has been carried out by the team at the AWS Quantum Computing Center at the California Institute of Technology ( Caltech ).

The design of the quantum computing chip

One of the main challenges in quantum computing is error correction. The Ocelot quantum chip incorporates a novel architecture based on cat qubits , which allow certain forms of error to be suppressed intrinsically, thus reducing the resources required to ensure the stability of quantum calculations.

According to Oskar Painter, director of quantum hardware at AWS, this chip represents a key advance in the evolution of quantum computing. The combination of cat qubits with new quantum error correction techniques allows projections that future chips based on this architecture could reduce costs by up to a fifth compared to current models. This would accelerate the availability of practical quantum computers for the real world.

In addition, AWS researchers have published their findings in the prestigious journal Nature , consolidating the scientific importance of the project and providing access to the research community for further analysis and development.

How Ocelot can transform various industries

The development of quantum computers with greater stability and lower error correction costs could have a profound impact on multiple sectors . Potential applications of this technology include:

  • Faster and more precise drug discovery and development .
  • Optimization in materials engineering to create new composites with advanced properties.
  • More accurate predictions in the financial sector , improving investment and risk management strategies.
  • Improvements in cryptography and cybersecurity , through the ability of quantum algorithms to solve complex problems more quickly.

AWS and its commitment to quantum computing

The launch of Ocelot is part of AWS’s commitment to quantum hardware research and development. Through Amazon Braket , its quantum computing cloud platform, AWS enables scientists, developers, and businesses to experiment with quantum technology without owning their own hardware.
