Innomotics , a specialist in electric motors and drive systems, announces its participation in the development of the largest heat pump system in the Netherlands, located at the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Utrecht.

This system uses the residual heat from 65 million litres of treated wastewater per day, supplying between 25 and 27 MW of heat, covering around 15% of the district heating demand in Utrecht and Nieuwegein, benefiting around 20,000 households.

The collaboration between Innomotics , ENECO and Johnson Controls has been fundamental to the successful implementation of this project. Through Innomotics’ advanced motor and variable frequency drive technologies, the system has achieved unprecedented energy efficiency, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by 30,000 tonnes per year.

The Utrecht heat pump system uses ammonia as a natural refrigerant to distribute heat in optimal conditions, ensuring that it is environmentally friendly. Four heat exchangers and compressors driven by the company’s 1 MW motors, each controlled by a Perfect Harmony GH180 frequency converter, extract waste heat from the wastewater, optimising the efficiency of the district heating network.

This project exemplifies how advanced motor and drive solutions can transform energy challenges into sustainable opportunities. We are proud to contribute to a system that not only brings us closer to achieving renewable energy goals, but also directly benefits local communities.

André Hillebrink, Technical Sales Support Professional at Innomotics.

Innomotics’ cutting-edge technology and reliability enabled us to achieve high energy efficiency and substantial CO2 savings, making a real difference to our district heating network and the environment.
